This programme explores these themes by focusing on the connection of America\u2019s fighting forces with one region of England: the North East.<\/h5>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; border_style=&#8221;dotted&#8221; up=&#8221;12&#8243; down=&#8221;13&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Hundreds of \u2018GI Geordies\u2019 (former natives of North East England) were among the American Expeditionary Force that came to Europe in 1917\u201318, Tyneside dockyards repaired and maintained US Navy ships operating in the Eastern Atlantic and North Atlantic, and in 1918 a US Aero Squadron was based in Newcastle. By researching the relationships that developed between individuals, communities, and industries in the North East and US armed forces, this project will help to foster understanding in the region of this historic aspect of the \u2018special relationship\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;grid&#8221; oblique_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; triangle_shape=&#8221;no&#8221; padding_top=&#8221;10&#8243; padding_bottom=&#8221;10&#8243; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; box_shadow_on_row=&#8221;no&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;50464&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; edgt_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;8&#8243; down=&#8221;8&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>US Navy in the North Sea<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;6&#8243; down=&#8221;6&#8243;][vc_column_text]The US dreadnoughts were formed into the 6<sup>th<\/sup> Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet under Admiral Rodman.
