On the one hand ties of language and shared liberal parliamentary sympathies encouraged support for Britain, but against this there was resentment of the Royal Navy\u2019s blockade of trade with Germany.<\/h5>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;6&#8243; down=&#8221;6&#8243;][vc_column_text]<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-50479\" src=\"http:\/\/northumbriaworldwarone.co.uk\/geordie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/recruiting-poster.jpg\" alt=\"WW1 Recruiting Poster\" width=\"271\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/northumbriaworldwarone.co.uk\/geordie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/recruiting-poster.jpg 271w, https:\/\/northumbriaworldwarone.co.uk\/geordie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/recruiting-poster-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/>In Britain, there was criticism of the USA\u2019s failure to become involved in the war \u201cto save civilisation\u201d, and considerable contempt directed towards President Woodrow Wilson\u2019s apparent pacifism. Poor quality dud shells were christened \u201cYanks \u2013 too proud to fight\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately Germany was not able to capitalise on US anti-British sentiments, due to the impact of the U-boat campaign and US suspicions about German support for Mexican attacks against America. This escalated to a declaration of war on 4<sup>th<\/sup> April 1918.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The British press quickly changed its tune regarding Woodrow Wilson. H.H. Wilson\u2019s monthly, \u2018The Great War\u2019 told its readers that, \u201cowing mainly to ignorance of the domestic complications which it had to consider, President Wilson\u2019s foreign policy has not been appreciated properly by the British people as a whole, and the confession must be made that they have been less than just\u2026.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;grid&#8221; oblique_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; triangle_shape=&#8221;no&#8221; padding_top=&#8221;10&#8243; padding_bottom=&#8221;10&#8243; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; box_shadow_on_row=&#8221;no&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;50464&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; edgt_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;8&#8243; down=&#8221;8&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>US Navy in the North Sea<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;6&#8243; down=&#8221;6&#8243;][vc_column_text]The US dreadnoughts were formed into the 6<sup>th<\/sup> Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet under Admiral Rodman.
